New York State is in desperate need of Ethics Reform.
Unfortunately, Albany has done a good job of saying that something needs to be done to fix the problems but has come up way short in taking any real action. Studies have shown that NY has the most corrupt politicians in the nation. It is unfortunate that the actions of a few have tarnished the image of the many hardworking working elected officials and its’ time something is done to restore the public’s trust in the system.
Mike believes that being elected to represent his constituents would be an honor and privilege and is not something that should be taken lightly. He believes this is the attitude that all of our elected officials should possess.
There are many Ethics Law changes that have been recommended and none have been put into place. The perception is that this is a negotiation which incorporates legislator pay with ethics reform.
Ethics reform should not be tied to an increase in pay. Changes are necessary and should be done for the good of the State. It is time to put words into action. It is what the Taxpayers of this State deserve.
The Election system in New York State is broken and is in need of improvements on many levels.
It is no coincidence that New York re-elects incumbents at an alarming rate while the majority of New Yorkers are not happy with the job that their elected Officials are doing.
Taxpayers have become increasingly frustrated with the election process and many believe there is nothing that they can do to fix the problem, so why bother. Many are simply too busy trying to take care of their own lives with little time to spend on a system that they feel does not work for them.
Mike believes that something needs to be done to change the system and get the taxpayers engaged in the electoral process. He believes that with technology where it is and the time constraints on citizens today, there is no excuse for New York to be subjected to this archaic, chaotic and efficient system.
Once again Albany has talked a good game when it comes to these matters but little has been done to actually fix the system.
Term Limits and Legislator Salaries:
In addition to Ethics and Election Reform an Amendment to the Constitution must be progressed to incorporate Term Limits.
The ability for politician’s to hold office for an extended period of time and turn politics into a career is not healthy for the American Society as a whole.
It has created an environment where nothing ever gets accomplished. Where the status quo is accepted and the only thing that matters is winning the next election.
Most Politicians run on specific issues and are elected because the taxpayers would like to see change in the areas outlined. Our Elected Officials should be given the opportunity to fulfill those expectations but not be given an extended time to complete the tasks. They should be given an opportunity for change but then return to their chosen profession.
Mike believes that there should be no pay increase for our legislators. He believes that making a legislative body a full time position will do nothing to fix the problems with our current system of government. It will only further cement the bad practices we currently operate under, create more bureaucracy and regulations and ultimately put New York State into a downward spiral from which we may never recover.
